Tues 3/19 – Calendar Rearrangement

A few upcoming dates on the Homework Calendar have been moved around, in an effort to get Retake days on Problems Days.

In particular, please note that the Mastery Quiz for Section 7.1 will now be on *Thursday, March 21* (next class).

Welcome to the second half

Hello and welcome back from Spring Break!

Take some time this week to think about your Mastery Quiz scores and what you need to do before the end of the semester to earn the grade that you want. Fill out the chart on the Grades FAQ to figure out where you stand.

There are five retake opportunities left this semester, plus one extra group retake opportunity. And of course, on the Final Exam you can take up to eight retakes of your choice.

Please feel free to come see me or talk to me on Slack if you want any advice!

Syllabus/Policy Updates

  • Question Days are now “Problem Days” — to get you up to the board and working together in groups
  • The quiz schedule has been reordered slightly so that there aren’t any more days with two new quizzes at the same time (so be sure to reload the page if you’ve been keeping the calendar open in a browser tab)
  • New thing: HOMEWORK NOTEBOOKS. You’re going to like it. From now on you’ll keep all of your homework and notes in a spiral-bound handwritten notebook, and you’ll be able to use it DURING certain first-time quizzes (for example the 5.5 quiz on 2/19)!

New Mastery Quiz Schedule

Please note that the Homework Calendar has been updated to a new schedule where you will take just one quiz per day. Nearly every day in the syllabus now includes a quiz. I have tried to avoid situations in which you only have two days to prepare for a quiz on new material.

There are now just ten retake opportunities during the semester, three of which will be done in groups.

Including the 8 retake opportunities on the final, this means you have the ability to retake each quiz once, on average — although you could use those retakes to try certain quizzes multiple times if you prefer. The choice of quiz is up to you, the timing and number of opportunities follows the calendar.

Mastery Based Grading

In this class we will encourage you to have a growth mindset:

To encourage this positive growth mindset, we’re going to try something new called “Mastery-Based Grading”. Basically, we’re going to move away from the typical calculus-class model in which there are a few high-stakes, do-or-die exams. Instead, there will be a continuous stream of lower-stakes Mastery Quiz evaluations, each of which has opportunities for being retaken and improved upon.
