If you need to contact me please send me an <a href=\"mailto:laurataalman@gmail.com\">email<\/a> with &#8220;MATH 103&#8221; as part of the subject line.<\/p>\n<h3>Structure and content<\/h3>\n<p>Our explorations of mathematics in this course will be supported by 3D printing and design in the <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.jmu.edu\/3space\">JMU 3SPACE Classroom<\/a>. This will be a highly digital course and we will be using the internet as our primary textbook. We will also make use of online collaboration and publication tools, and use 3D design software and coding to create and explore mathematical objects. Main topics will include fractals and the fourth dimension, but we may also investigate puzzles, knots, polyhedra, graph theory, computational geometry, topology, squircles, splines, or whatever we find interesting.<\/p>\n<h3>Required materials<\/h3>\n<p>There are two required books for the course that should each cost around $10:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fractals-Very-Short-Introduction-Introductions\/dp\/0199675988\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fractals: A Very Short Introduction<\/a>, by Kenneth Falconer<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Things-Make-Fourth-Dimension-Mathematicians\/dp\/0374535639\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Things to Make and Do in the Fourth Dimension<\/a>, by Matt Parker<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you keep your 3D prints small in this class then you should not need to purchase any filament for the machines.
